Do i have a hernia? what if i do? can i do football this year?

football starts this august so all year ive been pushing myself to do strenuous workouts. also (honestly) i am a big show off and usually do full body shaves. however, i found no reason to leave a patch of hair in my groin area, so i shaved it all off. i noticed that there is a lump on the left side there, and its scaring me to death...ive been told by one area that it could be ingrown hair, because im not used to shaving the groin area and lower abdominal area. now im being told that its quite possibly a hernia.....if it is a hernia, and i get surgery, can i still join the JV football team? this is my first year of high school and i dont wanna miss it...the lump is not painfull at all and i normally dont notce it unless im checking my muscle growth in the mirror(narssasistic? maybe, but i wanna be sure im not scrawny) or taking a shower.... the lump is soft, and not VERY big....its like a small hill...smaller than a golf ball. i was thinking about just joining the team, and not telling them, but again, i need a physical...tey'll probably notice, and if they do, im screwed big time...please respond? im going crazy...
