Can anyone identify this sci-fi movie?

All I really remember is the cover of the movie. There is a large, asteroid-like rock sticking into the earth. It looks like a huge, jagged rocky thorn sticking into the ground, and the landscape looks somewhat like a desert. I think I remember something about people finding aliens inside the asteroid/ship, but I couldn't say if that's right. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
